Album Review

This compilation of early-1960s Brill Building recordings contains four tracks each by the Cookies, Carole King, and Little Eva, among them the hits "The Locomotion" (Little Eva), "It Might As Well Rain Until September" (King), "Keep Your Hands Off My Baby" (Little Eva), "Chains" (Cookies), and "Don't Say Nothing Bad About My Baby" (Cookies), all of them written by King with her then-partner Gerry Goffin. The album is filled out with the performers' versions of songs of the era that were hits for others, several of which were also written by Goffin and/or King, or by such Brill Building compatriots as Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil, Howie Greenfield, and Neil Sedaka. The result is a terrific sampler of early-'60s pop/rock.
