Price wasn't content with R&B fame; he yearned for pop acceptance too. He got plenty at ABC-Paramount from 1957 to 1960 (the time frame this 18-song retro addresses). Creating a brassy, accessible sound,
Price hit huge with his rock & roll rendition of "Stagger Lee" (here in two versions -- original and
American Bandstand-sanitized) and went all the way pop with the undeniably catchy "Personality." Innovative arrangements and
Price's earnest vocals greatly distinguish "Have You Ever Had the Blues?," "Lady Luck," "Three Little Pigs," and "Where Were You (On Our Wedding Day)," and there's a previously unissued "That's Love" to further up the ante.
