The longtime trumpeter with
Chris Barber has led surprisingly few dates in his career: four titles in 1960 and a 1980 album for the obscure European Plant Life label, plus this excellent CD from 1989. Joined by such fellow Brits as clarinetist
Bruce Turner, trombonist John Beacham, pianist
Ray Smith, rhythm guitarist
Jim Douglas, bassist
Vic Pitt and drummer Geoff Downes,
Halcox jams on 13 songs, most of which found their birth in Tin Pan Alley, except for an original blues and a couple of
Jelly Roll Morton tunes. Some (such as "I've Got a Feeling I'm Falling," "She's Funny That Way" and "Some of These Days") are jazz standards, while a few others (such as "My Darling" and "Georgia Cabin") are more obscure. Although Halcox's conception was a bit influenced by
Bunk Johnson, his technique was always on a higher level, and at the age of 59, he is very much in prime form on this easily enjoyable trad jazz session.
