As this collection attests, Firefall
was a group in which the whole was less than the sum of its parts. In this case, the parts happen to be former members of the Flying Burrito Brothers
, Byrds, and Spirit
. Nevertheless, Firefall
embarked on a mellow country-rock/pop path that would spur critical grimaces but commercial fortune during a short period in the late '70s. The group's only Top Ten hit, "You Are the Woman," a saccharine soft rocker buoyed by studio-heavy instrumentation (replete with flute, courtesy of member David Muse
, is the centerpiece here. "Just Remember I Love You," the group's second biggest hit (which fittingly went number two on the adult contemporary chart) is more of the same, while "Strange Way" tries to be angry but only comes off as a mildly peeved, bantamweight Crosby, Stills and Nash. Remarkably, there are seven more songs on this "best-of."
