During his career, pioneering New Orleans cornetist
Freddie Keppard (who succeeded
Buddy Bolden as the top brassman in the city) appeared on 25 recordings; 15 of the best are on this deluxe LP from the Smithsonian Institution, including "Stockyard Strut," "Messin' Around," both versions of "Salty Dog," and "It Must Be the Blues." Since all of
Keppard's recordings are currently available on a CD put out by the King Jazz label, the main reason to get this LP are for the extensive liner notes and seven photos of the legendary player.
