The Archies, obviously, were a studio concoction, but thanks to the sharp songwriting of veteran songsmith
Jeff Barry and the versatile voice of New York-based jingle and demo singer
Ron Dante, the cartoon group's albums were actually pretty tuneful affairs.
Dante has finally secured the rights to these late-'60s recordings and released this set (essentially it is
the Archies' second album,
Everything's Archie) all remixed and remastered as
The Archies on RKO, which Planet has in turn retitled
The Very Best of the Archies. It may not technically be the very best, but it's close, and includes that king of bubblegum songs, "Sugar, Sugar," as well as surprisingly clever pop fare like "Melody Hill" and the country-rock-tinged "Don't Touch My Guitar."
