This
Robert Goulet compilation (previously released under the title
If Ever I Would Leave You with a slightly different sequencing) offers no information about the source of the recordings, but aural evidence suggests they were made in the late '70s and/or early '80s. The collection begins with "Atlantic City (My Old Friend)," the song
Goulet sang in the 1980 film Atlantic City. "What I Did for Love," one of two songs given a disco arrangement, originated in the 1975 musical A Chorus Line. "You Light Up My Life" is
Goulet's cover of the 1977
Debby Boone hit. "Something to Believe In" and "The Way We Were" are songs
Goulet previously recorded on his 1976 LP
After All Is Said and Done, but these are different versions. His signature song, "If Ever I Would Leave You," which he introduced in Camelot in 1960, is the other song given a disco arrangement.
Goulet sings with typical power and assurance throughout, even though those arrangements don't suit him. He is at his best with big ballads like "It's Impossible" and "Theme from Love Story."
