Swimmer pulled from lower Niagara River

It's amazing what some people will do just for the experience.

A 19 year old man from the United Kingdom was found swimming yesterday afternoon between the American Falls and the Maid of the Mist dock.

New York State Parks police report the teen, a member of a national kayaking squad, thought it would be fun to take a swim at the base of the falls.

His fun ended when police pulled him out of the water and gave him a ticket for disorderly conduct.

Phone scam warning

If you get a call from Canadian Border Services asking for personal information and money, odds are its a scam.

The CBSA is warning about a new phone scam.

The scam involves a caller claiming to be from the Border Information Service.

The federal agency says the Service is not mandated to make phone calls requesting either personal information or money.

Anyone who receives a call is asked to contact the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.

St. Catharines lawyer loses license to practise

A St Catharines lawyer serving three years in jail for bilking his clients has been disbarred.

Graham Wilson pleaded guilty last June to defrauding clients, most of them elderly out of more than 600 million dollars.

Yesterday, the Law Society of Upper Canada revoked his license for engaging in professional misconduct.

Work to start on multi million dollar expansion to Niagara Falls highschool

Work is set to begin on a six million dollar expansion to St. Michaels.

Officials were on hand yesterday to kick off the expansion of the McLeod Road highschool.

Thanks to provincial funding the school will get 10 new classrooms, including improvements to its culinary, technology, music and exercise departments.

The expansion is expected to be completed by the time school starts in September.

Canada's Ambassador to U-S speaks out about growing Peace Bridge rift

Canada's U-S ambassador says Ottawa is willing to fight a move by New York state lawmakers to disband the Peace Bridge Authority.

In an interview with the Buffalo News, Gary Doer says recently passed legislation by the state to pull out of the bi national authority would delay improvements on the Buffalo side by prompting a court battle with Canada.

Doer telling the News, New York State cannot tear up the agreement noting "We believe that if the bill is signed into law by the Governor, it’s going to be a good day for lawyers and not a good day for Buffalo business. We would rather hire hard hats than lawyers."

Thirteen year old boy kills five year old sister with wrestling moves

A 13-year-old boy has been arrested after authorities say he told them he used TV wrestling moves on his 5-year-old half-sister, who died from the beating.

Sheriff's spokesman Col. John Fortunato says the boy was arrested Tuesday after a coroner's investigation found the girl died of multiple injuries, including broken ribs, lacerations of the liver and internal bleeding.

Deputies say they received an emergency call from the Terrytown home on Sunday and found the girl unresponsive. She was pronounced dead a short time later.

Investigators in New Orleans say the teen told them he repeatedly slammed the girl on a bed, punched her in the stomach, jumped on her and struck her with his elbow several times.

Another Montreal mayor resigns in scandal

Montreal has its second mayoral resignation in less than a year.

Interim mayor Michael Applebaum has stepped down a day after he was slapped with a series of criminal charges.

He made the announcement in a brief statement at city hall. He did not take questions.

Applebaum says he's innocent of the charges against him and will work to prove his innocence.

In a message to people of the city, Applebaum says he loves them and promises that he has ``never taken a penny from anybody.''

The provincial government had explicitly urged him to resign yesterday, after he was arrested and subjected to 14 criminal charges.

Update-NRP investigating a bomb threat at Niagara College's Maid of the Mist campus

Niagara Regional Police have re-opened all surrounding streets, and Niagara College's Maid of the Mist Campus following a bomb threat.

The bomb threat forced them to block off an area around the college on Dunn St.

Constable Derek Watson tells CKTB the call came in around 2:30, forcing police to evacuate the school.

Watson says Dunn St., Orchard Ave. Dixon St. and Level Ave have re-opened, so has the Maid of the Mist campus.

Police continue to investigate.

NRP looking for suspect in Fort Erie break and enter

Police are investigating an early morning break and enter in the Town of Fort Erie.

According to police someone entered the home on Princess Street through an unlocked door while the residents slept.

The homeowner says the suspect approached him while he was sleeping but managed to scare him off.

Police say the suspect got onto a green bicycle and took off westbound on Queen Street towards Central Avenue.

The suspect is described as a male, 5'10, medium build, with a tanned complexion, and scruffy facial hair.

He is approximately 40-50 years of age.

No one was hurt in this incident.

Seneca Nation hiring for casinos
