ROCK & ROLL IS DEAD . . .

...at least it is if you watched the MTV Video Music Awards late Sunday night.

The show in the past was rarely about the music but more about a show of pop stars acting out.

Last night’s show was lame. Even Katy Perry & Sam Smith looked bored. It was all fluffy music and girls in pretty dresses. It seemed more about fashion than about the music.

This is my chance to crow that there wasn’t a single note of rock music in the show. When they finally came to the category for best rock video, the guy read the Black Keys as “The Black EYES”.... and Lorde won for best ROCK video. I like Lorde because when she first came out she was almost an anti-star. To see her mugging with Taylor Swift was a bit of letdown.

Whatever.

When Maroon 5 played their song on an outdoor stage to big crowd,  everyone's hands were in the air...not to cheer or clap along with the music but to snap and film the band. It was that way for the whole song. We're seeing this all the time now. Won’t fans just put their phones down and actually listen to the music. Maybe that's all Maroon 5 deserves.

"BOOOOOO" to MTV for not opening up the stage to a wider range of music styles and artists.

Below, when the MVA’S were fun

NIRVANA playing a bit of “Rape Me”, then “Lithium”. Complemented  with audience stage diving, Dave Grohl’s gonzo drumming, Krist’s conking himself on his head with his bass (@ the 4:20 mark) and Kurt driving his guitar into his speakers.
