Canada's Team
After 162 games that produced absolutely nothing, all the Blue Jays players pack up their crap and make their annual exodus from the great white north like snowbirds in January. And the post season bravado from head office is in full swing. ‘We’re gonna be better next season.’ ‘We had some tough injuries to deal with’, and ‘We’re gonna spend some money on first rate pitchers’. Yeah, sure you are. The Jays finished the year 73 and 89, 22 games out of first place. The only good news is that the Red Sox were lousier. Let the excuses begin.
Meantime, the real fun begins tomorrow with the wild card games. Baltimore takes on Texas, while the Cards are in Atlanta. Baseball purists hate this one off, but it sure is a ratings grabber. The Yanks, Tigers and A’s are all in for the Americans, while Washington, Cinci and the Giants get ready in the N.L. Can triple crown Cabrera lead Detroit to the promised land? Will the oldtimer Yankees implode in the post season once again? Will there be a sequel to ‘Moneyball’ if the A’s win it all?
But the team I hope wins it all are the Washington Nationals. Only because they used to be the Expos, sucked for the longest time and finished this year with the best record in baseball. Before the Jays were even born I followed the Expos. As far as I’m concerned, Washington is Canada’s team.
