Sucker Bet

P.T. Barnum said one of you is born every minute, but it took Bob Rae to bleed you dry.  He was the premier who introduced Pro-Line to the gambling tax payers of Ontario.  Well now, the federal government is thinking about changing the rules.  Yesterday Blue Jays president Paul Beeston was in Ottawa warning the feds against allowing us to bet on single sporting events.  With Pro Line you’ve got to lay down a multiple wager in order to win any dough.  Beeston doesn’t like it.  He says it’ll be the Black Sox scandal all over again.

After sucking up to the NBA to get the Raptors, Bob took hoops off Pro-Line, but soon introduced Under-Over.  It was another sucker bet for us betting suckers.  Mike Harris’ stint as pit boss turned this province into a gansta’s paradise, when Point Spread was introduced.  Then soon to be former premier Dolton brought in Pro Picks, where you can now wager on game situations.  He also spent millions so the OLGC could drop that annoying C.  Like anyone cared.  And now they want to go completely Vegas by allowing betting on single games.

The government is worse than the mob, so winning at Pro Line is tougher than those illegal sports bar pools you’re in.  The government lines are at least a point or two higher than organized crime.  Where’s the incentive?  If Pro Line wants to rake in a major pot each week, their point spreads should be below what Vegas offers.  Then they wouldn’t need to offer single game betting.  People might exclusively throw away their money to them, instead of to their shady bookie.   But these days, you can’t tell the difference.
