Snickers' Journey: The Emails: Pt: 2

Posted By: Kristy Knight · 4/25/2012 8:00:00 AM

I hope you've been following the story of my adopted dog, Snickers, and his journey.  If not...go back to the KK blog archives.

His former family has contacted me.  We've been emailing back and forth since last Friday.

I want to know about Snickers past...and they want to know about Snickers present!

It's been heart-warming to say the least.

Check yesterday's blog to our first email chat.

This is day 2.

Hi Kristy,

I knew when you mentioned him over the radio that it might be him.
Soon as i got home i looked in ur blog and there he was. I was happy and very grateful that he didnt get put to sleep and someone took him in. Being that i somewhat know you from radio (fan),i knew he would be loved and taken good care of,Thank you.

Snickers is a mixed breed,Lhasa apso and i think shih tzu.

We had him for 6-7 months and we all loved him, although,  he was stupid lol.

My kids always got him going by knocking on the wall just to see him bolt to the door barking...ooohhh big scary watch dog!
Kayla my little girl would get a kick out of it and laugh hysterically...she was 4 at the time.

He loved sleeping with her in her bed,he'd lay at her feet facing the door...guarding instinct i imagine.

Walking in the garage from house entrance i didn't know he followed me,the door closed on his leg.
Next day he was not yet walking on it so too him to inlaws house. There the kids wont bug him and give him time to heal.

After a day he was still favoring it so wife (ex) and i took him to the vet. Little guy had a broken elbow. It was gonna cost $7000 to fix it. We deeply thought about it and were gonna do it but then vet also said there was very good chance in him having artheritis and needed constant prescriptions.

He gave us his word that if we gave him up he wouldnt be put to sleep and be taken care of. Made our decision easier but not by much.

I decided to walk home from the vet sobbing...sad!

For next few weeks we were second guessing our decision and wondered what happend or what the outcome was.
Now we know and we are super happy for him and i am SUPER sorry for you havingnto put up with him, lmao.

After hearing you on the radio about when you walked in the house and seen poo then looked at dog and he had that "uh ohh"look on his face...well i knew exactly what look. (i assumed it was Snickers).

The kids and i would absolutely love to see him again,i hope he would remember us,i sure he would Kayla.
Thank you for the opportunity and invite to see Snickers again.

Small world isnt it?

I responded....

Hey Gary!

Yeah....He's probably the dumbest dog I've ever met!  Thanks!  Thanks a lot!!!  Hahhaaa!

It's funny...he still sleeps at the bottom of the bed...facing the door.
I invite him up to the pillows for cuddles...and then he goes back to the foot of the bed.

Don't beat yourself up over what happened Gary.
Sometimes bad things happen to get you to where you belong....ya know?

Yes...he has problems with his remaining front leg.  He's having trouble walking again this week.  The joint is sore..and we've learned he has a "mineralized legament" in his arm pit of the remaining leg.

What happens is...the ligament gets weak from all of the pressure on it...so the body sends up bone material to cover and protect it.... which...makes it more painful.  The vet says we can laser the bone off of the ligament..but it will just grow back.

Sometimes he needs pain meds...but he's fine.  He's good to let me know when he can walk and when he can't.
(He's smart enough for that apparently).  If I don't have his stroller...I end up carrying him around the neighbourhood!  That totally rocks on hot days!!!!!!!!!  (f**k!)

He got lucky...not sure about me though!  Hahhaaa!

The Humane Society decided it would be best if his leg was amputated.  I never knew him with 4 legs.
We always joke that we're glad he doesn't have 4 legs!  There would be no way to keep up with him!

So...I knew he grew up with kids.  He loves kids!!!  He is nuts about this little girl in the neighbourhood...she's about 5.  So that makes sense.  I guess he misses Kayla.

Thanks the kids for teasing him about knocking on the door.  He still goes nuts if someone does!  Thanks!!!!!!

Couple of questions..

Did you guys have strict rules about the kitchen?
He's the only guy who waits outside of the kitchen when we are cooking or eating.  Odd....

One other rather uncomfortable question...

You were his safe place weren't you?
I have a feeling you were his bond...

He's crazy about guys.  He doesn't seem to trust women.  (Smart after all I guess!)
Which is probably why he fought me for a year...

Yes!  We will meet soon to hook you guys back up!  He would love that...and so would I!!!!

Anyway...Thank you sooooo much for contacting me.  We've been very excited about finding you guys and hearing more about "the boy".

Write back soon!

Can't wait to meet you and the kids!!!
