To the shy kid on the first day of school
I, Kristy Knight, was a shy kid.
I dreaded the first day of school too.
Nobody would talk to me. I didn’t know it was mostly because the other kids were kind of shy too.
I know now that if I had just talked to the other kids...they would have talked to me....but it was way too scary.
What was I supposed to say to kids I didn’t know?
I kept to myself.
I went to school every day and wanted to make friends.
I found one or two that were brave enough to say “Hi” to me. They were nice.
I was shy in high school too!
I ate my lunch and read Rolling Stone magazine in the library every day.
Then I found something I loved. I played guitar.
I was good at it...and it made me feel good.
All of a sudden, kids wanted to be my friend.
I thought it was silly that they wanted to hang around me now just because I played guitar....but whatever. I was cool all of a sudden.
I started working in radio in high school. Then I got even cooler!
I’m still shy. Sometimes I just don’t know what to say to people.
Sometimes people don’t understand...but I know there is nothing I can do about how they feel...I just have to be happy being me.
If you’re a shy kid....I just want to tell you.....
Being shy never goes away....but it does get easier.
Find something YOU love to do.
Find something that YOU are really really good at.
That seems to make things better.
How do you know what you’re really good at? Answer this question...What do you dream about doing?
Now go do it.
Good luck to my shy friend who I’ve never met.
Someday you will be cool.
Go find that thing YOU love...and be brave enough to not care what anyone thinks about it.
You’ll be fine.
