The New ZZ Top Song is Taken From a Rap Song
The great new single from ZZ Top, "I Gotsa Get Paid" is an interpretation of a rap song by Texas hip-hop DJ DMD & rappers Lil' Keke & Fat Pat. If I didn't tell you this, you wouldn't know. No need for the purists to get their shorts in a knot.. AND.. they're all from Houston....it's all good.
ZZ Top takes the top line "I got 25 lighters on my dresser. I gotsa get paid" and the original's rhythm, but that's all.
(25 lighters refers to a practice by dealers who use cheap plastic lighters for viles. They take out the fluid and stuff them with cocaine and move them on the street)
The new ZZ Top album is produced by Rick Rubin, one of first producers to mix rock with hip-hop. More importantly he's got ZZ Top sounding like ZZ TOP again!
Care to compare the two?
The new ZZ Top song is part of a campaign for a line of malt beverages from Jeremiah Weed...the ZZ Top part is about a minute in but watch the whole thing. Very cool.
Now here's a version of the original:
