Muddy Waters & The Rolling Stones

Have you ever been lucky enough to be at one of those shows when (it seems) a rock star suddenly seems to show up and gets hauled up on stage.

Me neither.

Can you imagine the surprise when people came to a Chicago club to see Muddy Waters play a set and  the Rolling Stones suddenly walk in,  take a table and eventually take the stage to jam with the great blues legend.

These things are rarely spontaneous. Watch the video - the event is suspect. It’s not too often that the table right in front of the performer sits empty, that there are a bunch of cameras in the house and the lighting is just right to capture it all. In spite of this it turns out to be a spectacular night. When the Stones first started 50 years ago they were infatuated with American blues music and covered a lot of Muddy Waters’ songs. In the early days they made a pilgrimages to Chicago to seek out the roots of the music they loved so much.

This show finds them hanging with one of their heroes and it’s captured on a new dvd: MUDDY WATERS & THE ROLLING STONES: LIVE AT THE CHECKERBOARD LOUNGE – CHICAGO 1981. It comes out this week as a dvd and a dvd/cd package. A dvd/vinyl package will come out later in September.
