I don’t pine for things to be as they once were too often but I do miss the days when the only relationship you had with your favourite band was the music. Maybe your faves were in a couple of magazines, a tv interview and if you were lucky, they came to your city in concert – most of the time though, there was JUST the music. It was a time when there a lot of unanswered questions. Let’s call it mystique. Rock has lost most of it’s mystique for the sake of sales. Led Zeppelin NEVER would have done what most artists do today – which is “give away” too much.
That said, I have to admit I love this kind of introspection.
For months in advance of the sale of their new album Lightning Bolt, there has been a barrage of promo. I call it Pearl-Jam-O-Rama and I’ve tried to get most of it here on this one page.
Pearl Jam’s new album comes out on Tuesday BUT you can stream it for FREE in iTunes by CLICKING HERE. In my books, that’s all you need, but if you you’d like to go further....
Let’s start with a short documentary produced to promote the album:
Instead of lining up schmucks like me to file in & out of hotel rooms or recording studios to ask the same old questions, PJ picked some cool pretty people to interrogate them in a different way. If you want to explore more check out the videos below.
First up is Judd Apatow, a writer & film director / producer of some of today’s funniest movies. His interview with Eddie Vedder is strictly business – no pranks, no hair chest removal:
This one features Steve Gleason, former NFL star with The Saints who is now battling ALS. He grew up in Washington state listening to Pearl Jam. They were as psyched at having him do this interview as he was talking to his heroes.
Some of the guys in Pearl Jam are surfers so it comes as no surprise that they chose Australian surfer Mark Richards to sit down with them.
Finally, we have Carrie Brownstein, who stars in the tv series Portlandiaand who was once in Sleater-Kinney. In this one they PJ talk Eddie & the lyrics.
If you're still with me....or you've scrolled all the way down to the bottom of the page, here, I guess is the "encore": the video for the new single “Sirens”. Have to admit, a pretty sweeeet song.
