Fewer Canadian kids are commuting by walking or biking.

A new report finds fewer Canadian kids are commuting by walking or biking.    Active Healthy Kids Canada released its annual Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth today and it assigned a ``D'' grade for active transportation.    Walking or biking to and from school can add up to 45 extra minutes a day of physical activity compared to travelling by car, train or bus.    In Canada, a survey found while 58 per cent of parents walked to school when they were children, only 28 per cent of their own kids are doing so today.    ... read more

Children trapped in rubble after massive tornado hits Oklahoma City suburb

A massive tornado tore through a suburb of Oklahoma City Monday, killing at least 51 people, including children. The twister touched down in Moore, OK, just outside of the capital.  The tornado, ranked by the National Weather Service as an EF-4 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, had sustained winds of 320 km/h.  It flattened entire neighbourhoods, including two schools, trapping children in the rubble.  At one of the schools, all of the children have been accounted for.  At the other, Plaza Towers Elementary School, several of the students have been pulled out alive but the rescue operation continues. Founding member of The Doors, Ray Manzarek, has died

Ray Manzarek, one of the founding members of 60's rock group The Doors, has died. Manzarek died at a clinic in Germany from bile duct cancer. Along with Jim Morrison, Manzarek founded the group in California.  It went on to become one of the most successful rock bands in history, despite the death of Morrison in 1971. He briefly served as the band's vocalist but The Doors eventually split apart.  Manzarek continued to remain active in the music industry, playing in several bands, producing others, writing and working on films. Good samaritan in Welland robbed of cash

Sometimes it does not pay to be a good samaritan.A man walking on Division Street in Welland last night at around ten o'clock, stopped to help another man slumped over his bike, who appeared to be having difficulty breathing.He helped the the cyclist walk the bike, but when they reached the entrance of the Market Square, the man who was apparently feeling ill put the other guy in a choke hold from behind.The good samaritan passed out, and was robbed of cash.Detectives from the Central Region Detective Office are investigating.  Anyone who may have seen this ... read more

Newfounland hit with major snow storm

Gander, Newfoundland has broken its record for the greatest snowfall in May that has been on the books since 1945.    The previous record was 29 centimetres.    But Environment Canada says 54 centimetres fell in Gander on Saturday and Sunday and that the total climbs to 66 centimetres if you include the snow that melted before the brunt of the storm hit. read more

Canadian and American missing in Mexico

Mexican media are reporting that a Canadian and an American have gone missing from the resort city of Puerto Vallarta.    The online newspaper Noticias PV says Diego Hernandez, a Canadian martial arts instructor, and his friend Craig Silva vanished on May 8.    The paper says Puerto Vallarta's director of public safety, Silvestre Chavez, didn't learn of the men's disappearance until five days later and has launched an investigation.    A Facebook group that aims to collect tips about the men's whereabouts says their families fear it was a kidnapping.    It says the pair was last seen in ... read more

Yahoo to buy Tumblr for over one billion dollars

There's a major business story unfolding this morning.    Yahoo is buying online blogging forum Tumblr for 1.1-billion dollars U-S.    C-E-O Marissa Mayer is trying to rejuvenate Yahoo, and is betting Tumblr will provide it with a hook to reel in more traffic and advertisers on smartphones and tablets. read more

Canadians can expect a more 'typical' summer this year

It`s time again to break out the sunscreen Canada, but don't worry about sizzling all season.   Meteorologists at AccuWeather-dot-com say most Canadians can look forward to a more ``typical'' summer this year.    Lead forecaster for Canada Brett Anderson predicts this summer won`t be as sweltering as last year.    He says during the coming months spells of hot, dry weather will be broken up by welcome cool fronts.    Atlantic Canada is expected to get a warmer than average summer, and the southern half of Quebec can also expect the mercury to rise.    Southern Ontario is expected ... read more

Remains found on Dellen Millard's farm

The CBC reporting this morning that investigators searching the farm that belonged to 27 year old murder suspect Dellen Millard, have found remains on the property.Millard is charged in the death of Ancaster man Tim Bosma.Last week, police found the burned remains of Bosma, and say he was killed May 6th, the day he disappeared.According to the CBC, forensics investigators are now working to determine whether those remains are human or animal.On Friday, police found an incinerator on the property.The machine, known as "The Eliminator," is used to cremate livestock, but police say Millard didn't ... read more

Victoria Day name change?

A group of Canadian actors, writers and politicians want Victoria Day renamed.    The group includes author Margaret Atwood, Green Party leader Elizabeth May, and actor Gordon Pinsent.    They`ve signed an online petition to rename today's public holiday ``Victoria and First Peoples Day.''    Peter Keleghan, an actor and spokesman for the group, says it would honour both the Crown and Canada`s indigenous peoples.    He says it would help create a better understanding of the peoples who helped shape Canada.    National Aboriginal Day is celebrated on June 21st but it's not recognized as a national holiday.    ... read more
