Province-wide day of action for local schools

Hundreds of people are expected to rally across the province this weekend to "Save Local Schools".
Protests are planned for Saturday in places including St. Catharines & Welland.
Supporters of West Park Secondary School in the Garden City will gather at Montebello Park at 1pm. West Park is 1 of 3 local high schools which could be closed by District School Board of Niagara next year. Trustees will make a decision next month.
In Welland, demonstrators are trying to save 2 schools, including Crowland Central School which is scheduled to close this summer. A march from Old Lyons Creek Rd starts at noon.
The provincial organizers of Save Local Schools want a moratorium on school closings by boards, until there's a better system to give parents more say in the school review process.
In its recent budget, the provincial government said it would change funding to encourage schools to "consolidate underutilized school sites".
Save Local Schools organizers also want more accountability & oversight of school boards & for public & Catholic boards to work together to save money.
