The federal government is tightening Employment Insurance eligibility rules.
They're bringing in strict definitions on what constitutes "suitable employment" & what the unemployed must do to find a job in order to get off EI.
The changes means Canadians will be treated differently depending on how often they've collected EI benefits in the past, or how long they're getting benefits for.
For workers who've been mostly employed the past 10 years, they need to accept a job in their field, as long as it pays at least 90% of their previous hourly wage.
But as time goes on, EI recipients will have to be less picky. After 18 weeks, they'll have to be willing to take a lower paying job, within 80% of their previous pay.
