VIA axes Niagara ticket agents

7/4/2012

Hopping a VIA train in Niagara will be a different experience come fall.

The company is doing away with ticket agents at stations in St. Catharines & Niagara Falls, eliminating 4 jobs.

The switch will mean you'll have to buy your train ticket online or from an automated kiosk.  There won't be anyone either to help people board trains.

The move is part of what VIA calls its "modernization" plans announced last week.

VIA says southwestern Ontario is home to some its poorest-performing lines.  They say with new flying options & growth in GO Transit, demand for their rail service is down.

It's why VIA Rail is axing a handful of routes in & out of Niagara:

-Train 92 Toronto-Niagara Falls CANCELED Saturdays & Sundays

-Train 95 Toronto-Niagara Falls CANCELLED Fridays & Saturdays

-Train 90 Niagara Falls-Toronto CANCELLED

-Train 95 Niagara Falls-Toronto Sundays-Thursdays CANCELLED

VIA is hoping GO Rail can pick up their extra passengers, but GO trains don't chug into Niagara outside the summer months.
