After years at war with the DSBN, a Grimsby dad will get a hearing with Ontario's Human Rights Tribunal.
In 2010 René Chouinard took issue with the board's policy of allowing Gideon Bibles to be given to 5th graders with their parents' OK.
Chouinard doesn't think reading material from any religion should be handed out in public schools. But if Bibles are fair game, Chouinard says the Quaran, the Torah, the Vita & atheist pamphlets should be allowed to be sent home with kids too.
In March 2010, the District School Board of Niagara tweaked its policy, allowing other religious groups to approach them & ask for permission to give students something to read.
But Chouinard says no group other than the Gideons have been able to hand out material since the change.
While René & wife Anna have applied to hand out "humanist" books at DSBN schools, he says that's a secondary solution. He really wants religious books out of the public system altogether.
No date has been set for the Human Rights Tribunal hearing.
