NDP wants hold on school shutdowns

5/15/2012

Welland's MPP is asking the provincial government put a hold on closing schools until they make good on a promise.

In 2007, the government said they' study the Accommodations Review process but have yet to follow through.

In a news release, New Democrat Cindy Forster calls the process used to decide the fate of schools "questionable".

At least 1 high school in Forster riding is expected to close in 2013.  West Park in St. Catharines & Thorold Secondary School are both on the chopping block at the District School Board of Niagara.  Trustees are considering 2 options---one that would close West Park & Kernahan Park.  The other would see the shutdown of Kernahan Park & Thorold High.  Trustees are expected to make a decision next month.

Elementary school, Crowland Central Public in Welland is set to close this summer.

In its recent budget, the provincial government said it would change funding to encourage schools to "consolidate underutilized school sites".
