Young man drowns in Niagara Whirlpool

Police say tragedy has struck in the Niagara Whirlpool.

On Saturday afternoon just after 4 emergency crews were called to the area of the Niagara River known as the Whirlpool for a man in distress.

Niagara Helicopters, Whirlpool Jet Boat, the Erie County Sheriff’s Department, and the U.S. Coast Guard also arrived on the scene to help.

Police say a 22 year old man had been with friends, having a barbeque at the bottom of the gorge when he  entered the water to cool down.

The man soon struggled against the strong currents of the river and after a short time he ran into trouble and couldn't reach shore. 

A number of people in the area made several attempts to assist him, but were unsuccessful due to the strength of the currents. 

After a two hour search police say the man is presumed drowned.

His body has not been found.

Niagara Regional Police are expressing gratitude to the citizens who tried saving the man.

Police also thanking Niagara Helicopters Limited and Whirlpool Jet Boats for their tireless efforts.

The man's name has not been released.
