Group drops opposition to Canadian Motor Speedway
A citizen's group is dropping its opposition to a NASCAR-style track planned for Fort Erie.
The Citizens Coalition of Greater Fort Erie has reached a deal with the team behind the Canadian Motor Speedway & is pulling out of an Ontario Municipal Board review of the project.
It isn't clear what the terms of that deal are, but the coalition had raised concerns about the environmental impacts of the raceway.
2 other groups are still opposed to the Canadian Motor Speedway. The OMB will wade into the fight Monday, when an exam of the plan gets underway in Fort Erie council chambers.
4 weeks have been set aside for the OMB probe, but the town believes with the coalition dropping out, it should be done by July.
With word horse racing will end in Fort Erie at the end of the year, many locals &business owners are believe the speedway would breathe new life into the town.
The proposed complex includes:
-a 1-mile paved oval with seating for up to 65 000 people
-a 2.5-mile paved road course including a run for motocross, BMX & snow mobiles
-a 74-acre commercial complex including restaurants, shops, a fitness centre & hotel
-a 71-acre parking & camping area
-a 66-acre business park
