This weekend is the official kick-off to commemorative events set to take place over the next three years marking the battle that helped shape Canada.
The Niagara 1812 Legacy Council is hosting the Opening Ceremonies this weekend.
On Saturday Canada’s Governor General and commander-in-chief David Johnston was on hand at Queenston Heights for a ceremony that has launched a series of commemorative 1812 peace garden dedications set to take place across Ontario and New York state.
Today a multi-denominational church service will be held at Chippawa Battlefield in Niagara Falls.
That's the spot where the opening engagement of the Niagara campaign of 1814 took place.

The service is set to be held at 1 p.m.
Tonight at 9p there will be a movie night at the Oaks Garden in Niagara Falls, with a viewing of WNED’s documentary “The War of 1812”.
