College teachers ask for a conciliator as contract talks stall

7/19/2012

It looks like the province could have another group of teachers out on the picket lines this fall.

The union representing more than 10 thousand community college teachers has requested a Ministry of Labour conciliator after contract talks with management have hit a standstill.

Ontario Public Service Employees Union bargaining team, co chair Carolyn Gaunt says management is telling us they want a deal by the time our contract expires August 31st but the evidence of that is quite the contrary on what has been happening during negoitations

She adds the colleges have flatly rejected every proposal we have put forward and refuse to table their complete offer.

Key issues for the union include academic freedom, online teaching and fair treatment for part time faculty.
