Ottawa Also Battling Guns and Gangs

7/23/2012

As Toronto's mayor and police chief meet with the premier today to discuss the number of shootings in the city,  Canada's Justice Minister says Ottawa has moved on a number of fronts to try and deal with the issue as well.

Rob Nicholson says they are spending considerable resources on anti gang intiatives and they are also cracking down on guns coming into Canada from the U-S.

Nicholson admits trying to stem the flow of illegal guns into Canada is a continuing problem with some six thousand illegal weapons seized at the border over the last few years.

The Niagara Falls MP says they have also brought in harsher penalties for people who commit gun crimes.

The Justice Minister adds they are always looking for ways to combat gun violence and deter people from joining gangs.
