About 200 Niagarans are poised to lose their jobs.
The Hudson's Bay Company plans to close Zellers stores on Morrison St in Niagara Falls, Garrison Rd in Fort Erie & dozens more across the country.
Most Zellers stores have been snatched up by Target as the US discount chain expands north. HBC says the 64 Zellers stores left over aren't viable.
The company hasn't ruled out re-opening some stores under a different retail banner. HBC also owns the Home Outfitters brand. The only Niagara location is in St. Catharines.
Zellers plans to close Zellers stores country-wide by March 2013, leaving 6400 people jobless. The location in Fort Erie will go dark just before Christmas.
The Zellers at Welland's Seaway Mall will open as a Target in the summer of 2013. In St. Catharines, the Pen Centre's Zellers will do the same in the winter of 2013. The Zellers at the Fairview Mall closed last month to be converted into a Wal-Mart.
