Foreign investors are looking at buying Fort Erie race track

8/10/2012

Not one, but two investors are looking into purchasing the Fort Erie racetrack and the property surrounding it.

The Fort Erie Economic Development Corportation has been looking for different ways to keep the track open ever since the owners decided to close it four years ago.

Fort Erie Live Racing Consortium CEO Jim Thibert says ever since the province pulled the plug on the slots at tracks program, and even longer before that, they have had to come up with ways to build their own marketplace.

With over three million travelling past the site annually the land would need amenities to bring tourists there that may not want to take in horse racing.

Thibert says the racing consortium would run the track and the new owner would be responsible for the balance of the land.

Thibert says this plan has been in the works for six years.

He has not received an offer from either party yet.

One thing that is for sure, the track will not close.

He says if they close the track, there is a possibility it may never open again.
