Expert: Chrysler to set model for CAW talks with GM & Ford

8/15/2012

CAW negotiators sat down with Ford Canada officials in Toronto Wednesday, as the union wrapped initial contract meetings with the Big 3 automakers.

The union kicked off the process Tuesday with quickie separate meetings with General Motors & Chrysler.

Canadian Auto Workers, which made concessions when US automakers struggled during the 2008-09 recession, now wants to share in profits of the industry on the rebound.

The union will pick 1 of the 3 automakers as a negotiating target after Labour Day.  The deal that's hammered out between the CAW & that company will set the precedent for talks with the other 2.

Tony Faria, an automotive expert at the University of Windsor, predicts that Chrysler Canada will be chosen, because the company has the biggest Canadian footprint of the automakers & therefore the most at stake.
