The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has expanded its ground beef recall.
The recall warning was issued Sunday about beef products distributed by XL foods, because of fears the beef may be contaminated with E. coli bacteria. The recall was nationwide, and the announcement Sunday affected beef sold under the Kirkland Signature brand, which is carried by Costco stores across Canada.
The updated recall now affects more stores across the country, including Sobey's, Foodland and Metro stores in Ontario.
Consumers who bought ground beef from any of these stores recently are being urged to contact the stores.
Food contaminated with E. coli may not look or smell spoiled, but the Agency says consuming food contaminated with the bacteria can cause serious or potentially life-threatening illnesses.
In the worst cases, severe abdominal pain, diarrhea, seizures or strokes may occur.
So far, there have been no reports of illnesses connected to the recalled meat.
