Dump truck hits QEW overpass; woman airlifted to hospital

9/19/2012

A large dump truck trailer slammed in to the Lundy's Lane overpass on the Fort Erie bound QEW Wednesday morning, shearing the trailer off the rig, wedging it against the overpass and the highway.

The accident caused considerable damage to the overpass, forcing the shut down of Lundy's Lane until such a time engineers can determine if it's safe to use.

A minivan was caught up in the carnage on the highway, resulting in life threatening injuries for the driver who was airlifted to a Toronto hospital.

CKTB listeners were quick to snap photos of the crash.  Arnie called CKTB's Tom McConnell to say he'd never seen anything like it.

"The dump truck itself ... that's sitting on the highway on the QEW on the side of the road and the box is ripped right off the truck."

The truck driver pulled over to the side of the QEW, the large hydraulic arm bent at an odd angle. Up above, on Lundy's Lane, chunks of concrete and large pieces of a busted highway sign were scattered along the road.

Lundy's Lane remains closed, as does the Fort Erie bound QEW as the Ontario Provincial Police remain on scene investigating this accident and another that happened a short time later in the same general area.
