Niagara Regional councillors divided on the issue of governance

9/21/2012

Niagara Regional council continues to grapple with the issue of governance.

Last night council had a very vocal discussion on what they think is wrong with the region .

And it was agreed there is confusion over what services the region and the 12 municipalities are responsible for among local residents.

The other problem is the region has done a poor job communicating its role to residents.

St. Catharines Councillor Andy Petrowski says confusion isn't the problem, duplication of services is.

Petrowski says instead of spending money on consultants he is challenging councillors to start tabling motions with concrete proposals on how to tackle what he calls this monster of two tier government.

He adds until we start thinking of Niagara as one, and not 12 individual municipalites, we will never be able to create real jobs and a real economic machine out of the region.
