No charges in paint store crash in St. Catharines

9/26/2012

No charges are expected to be laid in Tuesday's spectacular crash in north St. Catharines.

Three people were hurt after a pick up truck hauling a small construction vehicle crashed in to the back of a paint store at Lakeport and Lakeshore Roads in St. Catharines.

According to witnesses, the truck veered in to the back of the Benjamin Moore store, crashing through the wall and tossing paint cans everywhere.

Police believe a medical issue was behind the crash don't anticipate any charges will levelled against the driver.  An eyewitness to the crash tells CKTB said the driver had earlier hit his head at a nearby construction site, possibly causing him to black out but that hasn't been confirmed by police.

At least two store employees were hurt, according to eyewitness Brad who worked next door.  He rushed over after hearing a very loud noise that he described as sound like and empty trailer hitting a speed bump at a high rate of speed.

"It sounded like that only about 50 times louder."

When he ran over to the truck, he could see smoke pouring from the gaping hole in the wall. At first, he thought it was the start of a fire.

"When I went in there, he still had the gas pedal floored because he was passed out ... we thought it was fire but it was the rubber from the tires burning."

The two employees and the driver all suffered non-life threatening injuries and were treated in hospital.
