Does Niagara Regional council need an integrity commissioner?

10/2/2012

A Niagara Falls regional councillor wants to stop the bullying around the council table.

Selena Volpatti will have a motion added to Thursday's council agenda asking staff to look into hiring an integrity commissioner to help keep the discourse civil.

Under provincial regulations governing local councils, only a commissioner can censure councillors who don't follow code of conduct rules.

Regional Councillor Debbie Zimmerman tells 610 CKTB's Tim Denis its a sad reality that there are times when politicians cross the line.

Zimmerman says she is not convinced council needs a full time commissioner but it wouldn't necessarily hurt to have someone to remind councillors to keep the discourse professional and civil.
