Tour bus not allowed to operate in U.S

10/8/2012

U.S. federal investigators say a motorcoach from Toronto involved in a crash on a New Jersey exit ramp this weekend was not permitted to be in that country.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, which is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation, says it is probing the Canadian company and its driver as part of an investigation into the crash.

A bus carrying 57 passengers overturned on an Interstate 80 exit ramp Saturday, sending 23 passengers to hospital with injuries.

Police said the group was travelling with Cynthia's Bus Tours, which had rented the transportation from AVM Max 2000 Charter Services Inc.

The department says the same bus company is registered under the name AYM Max Charter Services Inc., which has ``no current operating authority'' in the U.S. because its insurance lapsed in July.

Online records also showed that the company had also been cited
for five fatigued driving violations since April 2011, including one related to a driver last May who worked for more than the permitted 11 hours.
