St. Catharines is getting another family doctor.

Dr. Dishani Gunawardena is setting up her practice in the Garden City, she joins her husband Dr. Rajiv Balasuriya at the Belton Medical Clinic and is now accepting new patients.

Dr. Gunawardena is from Toronto and studied medicine at the University of Massachusetts and recently completed her residency in Boston.

In a release, the public health department says the couple were drawn to the region by the new hospital in west St. Catharines, scheduled to open in March, the proximity to Toronto and the U.S and Niagara's lifestyle.

Dr. Balasuriya opened his practice in St. Catharines at the Belton Boulevard clinic in August 2011, also relocating from Toronto.
