Jury selection to begin in murder trial for St. Catharines man accused of killing a Toronto cop
Jury selection is scheduled to begin Thursday in the trial of a St Catharines man charged in the death of Toronto Police Sgt. Ryan Russell.
45 year old Richard Kachkar has pleaded not guilty to a charge of first-degree murder in Russell's death in January 2011.
Russell died while trying to stop the driver of a snowplow which had allegedly been stolen during the early morning hours in downtown Toronto.
Russell was promoted to the rank of sergeant only six months before his death and he was the first Toronto officer to die in the line of duty since 1994.
About 12,000 police officers from across North American attended Russell's funeral at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, in what was believed to be one of the largest funerals in Toronto's history.
