Fire Chief against 24 hour shifts
The Fire Chief raising concerns about efforts to move to a 24 hour workday for St. Catharines firefighters.
Mark Mehlenbacher says management isn't supporting the move, it's the union that is pushing for it.
He says he doesn't believe it's good for the profession of firefighting.
Mehlenbacher says there are concerns with the limited amount of time firefighters come to work there are issues with having the same camaraderie and community involvement.
Crews would still work the same hours but it would add up to an average of seven days a month.
Mehlenbacher says that's on top of concerns with safety and sleep depravation.
He says management has passed through negotiations and have reached an impasse with scheduled mediation and arbitration dates in April and May.
