VRE outbreak declared at St. Catharines General Hospital

The Niagara Health System has declared a VRE outbreak at
the St. Catharines General Hospital.
The outbreak is in the C4 East surgical unit of the hospital.
An outbreak is declared when the number of hospital-associated cases is higher than what is seen as the normal threshold. There have been five cases in C4 East since January 5, 2013 and three currently at the General site.
VRE are germs that live in the gastrointestinal tract of most people that can become antibiotic resistant.
