Tense moments at Super Bowl RIDE check in Garden City

Niagara police getting more action than they anticipated during this weekend's Super Bowl RIDE checks.

Last night, just before midnight, a driver approached a RIDE check point set up on Ontario Street in St. Catharines at a high rate of speed.

He hit the brakes and lost control of his van, causing it to do a 180, striking a number of cones and narrowly missing two cruisers and four officers manning the checkpoint.

The driver was arrested and charged with dangerous driving and driving while under suspension.

All toll, police stopped 300 vehicles yesterday at RIDE checkpoints in Welland and St. Catharines, resulting in one impaired driving arrest, one refusal to provide a breathalyzer sample and one three day suspension.
