Canadians will be exempted from new Florida driver's license requirement

2/15/2013

Niagaran's who travel to Florida can rest easy, the state is waiving a new driver's license requirement for Canadians.

The state causing an uproar after announcing all out of country travellers would require an International Driver's License.

But now, Florida officials are promising to change the law so Canadians will be exempt.

Until that happens, Florida police are under orders not to enforce the law, which quietly took effect January 1st.

Despite the change of heart, CAA Niagara spokesman Rick Mauro says  hundreds of local residents flocked to CAA counters yesterday to get the permits.

And Mauro says until the law is officially changed to include the Canadian exemption he recommends travellers to Florida get the international license.

Mauro says they are still concerned about the insurance implications should a driver get into an accident.

The cost of getting an IDP is 25 dollars and Mauro says it takes only a few minutes for them to issue one.
