South African Olympic runner Oscar Pistorius sobbed this morning as he was charged with premeditated murder in the death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Pistorius was in court in Pretoria where the prosecutor told the court the athlete got up from bed, put on his prosthetic legs and walked seven metres from the bedroom toward the bathroom and shot 29-year-old Reeva Steenkamp several times through the bathroom door.

The prosecution contends the killing was premeditated because  Pistorius had planned to say he thought he was shooting an intruder.

The prosecutor also said the door was broken open afterward.

Defence lawyers say the Valentine's Day shooting was accidental.
   
There's no word yet on if the athlete has been granted bail.
