Pool at centre of Giardia outbreak cleared to reopen

3/6/2013

The pool at the centre of a Giardia outbreak in Niagara has been cleared to re-open

The Beacon Harbourside Inn pool in Jordan has been closed since January when cases of the parasite first started rising and Public Health declared an outbreak.

Giardia is a parasite that lives inside intestines of infected people causing vomiting and diarrhea.

Niagara Region Manager of Environmental Health Bill Hunter says there was a total of 75 cases of Giardia in Niagara, they believe this has peaked and the risk has ended.

Public Health wanted to ensure everything was properly sanitized at the pool and that the operators were properly educated on best practises to reduce the likelihood of transmitting infectious disease through pool use.

As for the initial cause of the outbreak, Hunter believes it stemmed from a "fouling incident".
