Contaminated soil and other unforseen issues are to blame another Niagara road project coming over budget.
The regional council public works committee learned Tuesday that road work being done on St. Paul Street west between Seventh Street and Ninth could run up to 1 million over its 7.37 million dollar budget.
Public works commissioner Ken Brothers tells 610CKTB news that about halfway into the project the construction crew came across contaminated soil that needed to be removed before further work could be done.
Brothers said early testing showed that they were aware of the soil that needed to be removed but later found that there was 2 to 3 times more soil than originally anticipated.
This comes just weeks after staff surprised councillors with the news that a Pelham Road project went 700 thousand dollars over budget. But Brothers maintains that ninety percent are done at or under budget.
