Fire tragedy north of Toronto
Four people have died after being trapped in a burning second-floor bedroom in a house north of Toronto.
York Regional Police say someone inside the home in East Gwillimbury, Ont., called 911 to report a fire around 5:30 a.m. this morning.
Const. Blair McQuillan says police and firefighters were unable to get three men and a woman out of a second-floor bedroom, where they died.
Their names have not been released as police work to notify next of kin.
Ontario Fire Marshal spokesman Scott Evenden says the investigation into the deadly blaze has only just started and couldn't say where the fire broke out or if smoke alarms were working.
Neighbours say a family of four lived in the home.
East Gwillimbury Mayor Virginia Hackson says the tight-knit town is mourning the loss of four of its residents.
``Our prayers and thoughts go to our community, to our firefighters and to the family that have had this loss today,'' she told reporters. ``It's a very sad day.''
