Port Colborne activist arrested in Russia
Two Canadians, including a Port Colborne man, are among 25 Greenpeace activists arrested and detained by the Russian coast guard after they protested Gazprom’s Arctic oil drilling operations.
Port Colborne native Paul Ruzycki was the chief mate on the 49-metre icebreaker-class Artic Sunrise in the Pechora Sea, about 113 km off the north coast of Russia.
A Greenpeace statement says the storming of the Arctic Sunrise took place a day after two activists were arrested following an attempt to board an offshore drilling platform belonging to state natural gas company Gazprom.
The Russian Coast Guard, which made the arrests on Wednesday, is part of the Federal Security Service, where a spokesman said he had no information about the claim
