No word on Port Colborne man detained by Russian authorities
Greenpeace is still trying to get word on the status of several activitists, including a Niagara area man, taken into custody by Russian authorities.
Greenpeace Canada's Arctic campaign coordinator Christy Ferguson tells 610 CKTB news, they have been out of contact with the crew of the Arctic Sunrise for more than 100 hours.
Among the crew members, chief mate, Paul Ruzycki of Port Colborne.
She says the Russian coast guard boarded the boat after a pair of activitists climbed a Russian oil rig as part of a protest against Arctic drilling.
Ferguson describes how a Russian helicopter appeared overhead, with more than a dozen officers rappelling down to the ship where they arrested crew members at gunpoint.
She says they have a legal team in Russia and internationally working to secure their release.
They are also in contact with Ottawa to enlist the help of the federal government.
