DSBN and city reach agreement on downtown St. Catharines school
An agreement reached between the DSBN and the City of St. Catharines to open a new school in the downtown.
The two-storey facility will be built on the existing Alexandra Public School site on Henry Street, to open its doors in September 2015.
The agreement was approved in camera at Monday's city council meeting and ratified by the DSBN board of Trustees Tuesday.
Director of Education Warren Hoshizaki says this is an important milestone that will make this new school a reality for students and their families in central St. Catharines.
As part of the agreement, George street between Dufferin and Pleasant avenues will be closed starting in May of 2014 to form part of the new schoolyard along with a portion of the adjacent Catherine Street Park.
The existing dog part will remain part of the park, but separate from the school play area.
The DSBN expects to tender the project in the spring of 2014, with an official groundbreaking ceremony in June.
