Budget talks underway at region
It's that time of year when local politicians start crunching the numbers trying to come up with budgets that don't carry too much of a wallop for local taxpayers.
It looks like regional politicians will have a tough time keeping this years property tax hike to two percent.
A look at the numbers last night by the region's budget committee shows, an arbitrator's decision to award police with a hefty raise, is going to make it tough to stick to that 2 percent.
But Chief Jeff McGuire is making an effort to keep spending in line, presenting the police services board yesterday with a budget that includes a move to close the Port Colborne police detachment and merge it with the one in Welland.
